The Andrey Melnichenko Foundation is Russia's first private foundation of educational infrastructure projects in the natural sciences. Its mission is to create an environment to develop talent in Russia's regions.
Andrey Melnichenko
Andrey Melnichenko is a self-made Russian industrialist and philanthropist. Over the past 20 years, he has created multi-billion-dollar businesses that follow the highest international standards of management, accounting, auditing, and health and safety. His corporations – fertilizer producer EuroChem, coal producer SUEK, and power generator SGC — are among the biggest in the world in their industries. They were built on merit, as Mr Melnichenko played no part in the post-Soviet privatizations and received no special treatment from the Russian government.
Andrey Melnichenko is a self-made Russian industrialist and philanthropist
At a time of economic turmoil following the breakup of the former Soviet Union, Andrey was studying physics in Moscow. While still working on his degree, Andrey and two like-minded fellow students found niches that would become the bedrock of his own business empire – first a currency exchange, then a bank that earned multiple awards from numerous respected international publications including The Banker and Euromoney, and became one of Russia's most successful and largest private banks, MDM Bank.
Branching out at the turn of the millennium, Andrey took an interest in the commodities markets, notably fertilizers (EuroChem Group AG) and coal (SUEK), recognizing their importance to building Russia's new economy. These industries were derelict and risky, and were not considered to be "strategic" by the government, which allowed them to be run without recourse to the political favor-brokering that has characterized other, "strategic" industries.
Over the course of a decade, Mr Melnichenko's companies invested more than US$16 billion in Russia's industrial sector
Andrey Melnichenko built EuroChem Group AG into one of the world's ten largest fertilizer producers. It is headquartered in Switzerland with operations in Russia, Belgium, Lithuania, Germany, and Kazakhstan, with a worldwide distribution network. His other major enterprise, SUEK, is the world's third largest exporter of premium, higher-quality thermal coal. The company has an exemplary health and safety record.
More than US $ 400 million has been spent on social and charitable programs.
Over the course of a decade, Mr Melnichenko's companies invested more than US$16 billion in Russia's industrial sector, helping to transform its economy while contributing to the global economy, food security and energy access. His companies employ more than 75,000 people, supporting wider communities with the highest standards in corporate social responsibility and environmental awareness. His companies have spent upwards of US$400 million on social and charitable programs, which have been recognized as leaders in Russia's annual "Leaders in Corporate Philanthropy" survey.
The Andrey Melnichenko Foundation supports talented children in science and education.
The Andrey Melnichenko Foundation supports talented children in science and education, and has developed a system of "social lifts" to support gifted children from the regions where his companies operate. Mr Melnichenko wants to ensure that talented Russian youngsters have a chance to become the world's next generation billionaires. Just as he was, at the age of 29, named by Forbes Magazine. In this way, Mr Melnichenko is "giving back" to the country that he believes made him who he is today.

Andrey is married to Aleksandra, formerly the Serbian singer Sandra Nikolic; they have a son and a daughter. He is fond of sea travel: his renowned Sailing Yacht A and Motor Yacht A reflect the same commitment to high-tech detail which have fueled his success; they represent a significant investment in sailing design and technology that drive innovation in the shipbuilding industry.
